“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

Your questions, answered

How is MoleMap Skin Cancer Clinic Adelaide, SA, different from other skin cancer clinics?

MoleMap has been detecting skin cancers since 2005. Our thorough skin cancer checks and mole monitoring system (part of our Full Body MoleMap service) ensure that fewer skin cancers are missed in routine skin checks. In addition, our skin examinations are performed by melanographers. These are healthcare professionals who are trained in the early detection of melanoma and other types of skin cancers. Any suspicious moles are dermoscopically imaged and sent to an accredited dermatologist for further review and diagnosis. That’s two sets of expert eyes for added reassurance. And that’s what makes a skin check at our skin check clinic Adelaide so effective.

How much does a skin check cost at Adelaide Skin Cancer Clinic?

At Norwood skin cancer clinic in Adelaide, the cost of our skin cancer checks depend on whether you opt for a SkinCheck or Full Body MoleMap.

The Full Body Mole Check in Adelaide is a thorough skin assessment with full body imaging, proactive monitoring of 'potentially at risk' moles, and free spot checks for 12 months. This service is recommended if you have a family history of skin cancer or any other factor that puts you at high risk of skin cancer.

Skin Check is intended for people at low risk or who have spotted a new or changing mole. There's the option to add on full body photography (SkinCheck+). For an overview of our services including prices and what exactly is included, see our full table of services. Don’t forget to check your health fund cover. Some private health insurers may cover part or all of the cost of a skin check at a skin cancer clinic.

How long do skin cancer checks at Adelaide MoleMap take?

The length of appointment will depend on the skin check service you select.

Should I visit a MoleMap clinic or a GP for skin cancer checks in Adelaide?

Some people choose to visit their GP for a skin cancer check, providing this service is offered. Depending on the GPs skin cancer detection training, you may be referred to an Adelaide skin specialist or dermatologist for further assessment. The benefit of visiting Norwood skin cancer clinic is that, unlike GPs, we only specialise in skin cancer detection and triage. Our melanographers perform skin checks inAdelaide daily, making them highly experienced in knowing what to look for. Our mole checks include dermatologist diagnosis, without the need (or wait) for referral. This means a faster and trusted diagnosis—for total peace of mind.

What are three warning signs a mole is becoming cancerous?

The Scan Your Skin method encourages you to look for a spot or mole that is:

  • Sore - you may notice itching, bleeding or a spot that doesn’t heal
  • Changing - in size, shape, colour or texture
  • Abnormal - looks ‘different’ compared to your other spots and moles

Early detection of skin cancer relies on consistent monitoring of your skin. The best way to do this is with regular (ideally every three months) at-home DIY skin checks and an annual professional skin check.

At what age should you get a skin check?

There’s no age limit for skin checks. To keep your skin safe, we recommend booking an annual skin check from adulthood onwards. Everyone should have a regular skin check, but it’s particularly important if you have a family history of skin cancer, as this puts you at higher risk of skin cancer.

Can a dermatologist tell if a mole is cancerous just by looking at it?

Dermatologists are specially trained in the early detection of skin cancer. In some instances they may be able to do this using a dermatoscope. This is a handheld microscope that allows for closer examination of the skin structure. As it’s not always possible to tell the difference between a skin cancer and a non-cancerous lesion through visual inspection alone, they may take a biopsy. This is where a small sample of skin is removed for testing.
